PERFECT HANDCRAFTED CHEESEBURGER, BEER IN SEBASTOPOL: HOP MONK

No West County summer outdoor lunch venue outshines the Hop Monk—a brew pub occupying an historic stone building in downtown Sebastopol—that in addition to the perfect cheese burger and other gourmet pub fare features a interesting menu of handcrafted artisan beers, including the pint of Great White that an enthusiastic Hop Monk patron (lower photo) was photographed hefting to toast our photographer as she prepared to visit beer nirvana.

Don't let the cutting edge emphasis on music on the linked website scare you away--the Hop Monk is a family friendly lunch spot offering your choice of indoor, sunny, or shaded outdoor dining in a casual setting with patrons ranging in age from 20's up to the boomer crowd.

INCREDIBLE WILD FLOUR BREAD BAKERY IN FREESTONE

One of our favorite amenities in West Sonoma County is Wild Four Bread, a family operated bread bakery located in the tiny town of Freestone, which is located halfway between the towns of Sebastopol and Bodega on Highway 116.

The bread is baked in a brick oven, and comes in some very unique varieties. Sure, you can get hard crust whole grain bread, but stop in and sample some of the more unusual breads from the bread tasting bar--all created by artisian baker Jed Wallach.

We particularly love their Goat Flat bread—which is pretzel shaped and baked with goat cheese and onion, and the amazing Foogzie Bread (baked with Gouda cheese and garlic) is to die for.

Not to mention that you will always find the bread variety that you want fresh from the oven. There have been times when a fresh loaf did not even survive the 3 minute drive back to our house! It’s that good.

The bakery also features table seating, an espresso bar, and the biggest sticky bun in the history of the culinary world.

Just outside the bakery is a wonderful organic garden that bakery customers--as well as the merely curios—are encouraged to stroll through. The garden provides an endless supply of organic fresh herbs for the bread baked there.

All of this makes Wild Four Bread a must addition to your West Sonoma travel checklist and a not insignificant reason to consider locating your weekend home here.

WELCOME TO WEST SONOMA LIVING!

We have been privileged to enjoy a weekend home in West Sonoma County for three and a half years now, and this has so enhanced our lives that we created this blog as a vehicle to share some of what we love the most about West County—as well as a resource for those thinking about a second home here or who are just visiting the area.

From rolling vineyard vistas, to apple orchards, to untouched open space, culminating in a breathtaking coastline, this area is all about the scenery—and so much more.

This area is also about the people, a welcoming and creative lot, who exhibit that openness and civility that is mostly a memory in the City. Driver’s stop for pedestrians!

In addition, the small towns that dot this beautiful and unspoiled area are well stocked with amenities that make it well worth your time to explore, from great cooperative art galleries, to fabulous intimate restaurants boasting three star cuisine and world class wine lists, to antique shops—it’s all here, but on a charming and intimate scale and in an unhurried atmosphere.

As time permits (we have day jobs!) we will be posting about the gems we come across during our weekends in this wonderful area.

Enjoy!
